Cathode, working with an alkaline medium, has >=1 surface made of a compsn. comprising (a) Ni, Co, Fe, Cu or Zn and (b) Ni, Co, Fe, Cu, Zn, ti, Mo, W, Mg, Mn, Nb, V, Ta,B, the rare earth metals and their hydrides. Esp. used for electrolysis of alkali chlorides. The cathode exhibits reduced overvoltage without prohibitive extra production and operating costs being needed. Pref. the surface comprises a binary cpd. formed between metals of the two gps. Alternatively the cathode has >=1 surface coated with a non-stoichiometric compsn. of formula AxByO2 of tungsten bronze type, where x = 0-1. Pref. A is Na and the B is selected from the second group of metals above and is esp Ti. Na ratio is 2-2.5. The invention relates to cathodes used in the electrochemical production of chlorine and alkali or alkali metal chlorates. A cathode for the electrolysis of an alkaline chloride chloride solution made of cable 1 is known. A disadvantage of such a cathode is the high overvoltage of hydrogen evolution, which leads to a significant power consumption during the electrolysis process. Also known is a cathode for the electrolysis of an alkali metal chloride solution made of an alloy of nickel or cobalt with smolybdenum or tungsten 2. When using this cathode in the initial period of the electrolysis process, the amount of overvoltage of hydrogen evolution is insignificant. However, over time, the magnitude of the overvoltage increases, JITO leads to unnecessary power consumption. “The purpose of the invention is to reduce power consumption by reducing the amount of overvoltage of hydrogen evolution at the cathode. The goal is achieved in that the cathode for electrolysis of the alkali metal chloride solution is made of an alloy of nickel or cobalt with titanium. When using the proposed cathode, a low amount of hydrogen evolution overvoltage is observed, and this value remains constant during the entire period of the electrolysis process. When conducting comparative tests of the known and proposed cathodes, the following overvoltage values presented in the table were obtained. Thus, the magnitude of the overvoltage of the proposed cathode is lower than the known value, it quickly stabilizes and then remains almost constant in time. Proposed Ti-Ni ten 110 110
